About this deal

They will infer Sam and Davey's thoughts and feelings, and express this through poetry, diary entries, drama and discussion. Children will explore and discuss how different styles of poetry have been used to show the reader how Davey was bullied. As a class, children will read chapters 20-26 of 'Cloud Busting' by Malorie Blackman, and then discuss the questions on the slides about the outcome of the boys' friendship. This book is suitable for KS2 pupils who have already started using poetry and are aware of the different poetic techniques. I would recommend this book for everyone in UKS2, this story would work brilliantly as a class novel, although it would be good to have the pages projected onto a white board or interactive screen to allow the class to follow along with the shape and style of the story as it is being read.

Sam is still embarrassed to be seen with Davey, but little by little, he has to admit, when it's just the two of them, Davey is a lot of fun. This chapter not only exemplifies Haiku; it even explains the five – seven –five syllable pattern, “a pure, paced rhythm….The simple vocabulary, including some ‘slang’ would serve well to distract poetry-averse readers from the fact that this story is an anthology of poems. It reminded me a lot of when I worked with students with autism and how they were a breath of fresh air to me and got me to look at the world more closely !

Readers experience the narrator’s perspective in a sensory way that is hard to imagine being achieved in any other form. Despite his Mum’s insistence, Sam doesn’t want to be friends with Davey, he thinks Davey’s a first class, grade A, top of the dung heap moron. They will analyse both how and why Sam and Davey change throughout the book, and link this to the themes of bullying, friendship and conformity. Combining artwork - especially in abstract or abstracted form - with rousing music can truly inspire children to draw on their senses. My favourite part of the book is when we get to really experience the way that Davey sees the world through the intense descriptions he offers to Sam, this progresses throughout the book and allows us to experience this alternate perception of reality along with them.

They're not perfect but they're still likable characters who are easy to relate to on some level—even if you don't identify with them 100%. As a class, they will then read chapters 14-19 of 'Cloud Busting' by Malorie Blackman, and discuss the given questions on the slides. Cloud Busting is a captivating story about one of the harshest aspects of school life for many children – the painful, destructive act of bullying. When really Davey turned out to be the bestest friend he had ever had who taught him how to see the world differently - more beautiful and exciting then he had done before! The text contains information about Malorie’s early writing career and her time as Children’s Laureate. We honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' continuous connection to Country, waters, skies and communities. The only thing I can possibly say I dislike about this book is the fact that I will never get to experience reading it for the first time again.

Because Sam and Davey live down the same road as each other their mums make them get along, Sam then realizes that he really does want to be Davey's friend but he hides it at school and that's when trouble starts. activity, children are challenged to create a shape poem to represent the thoughts and feelings inside Davey's head. In the alternative activity, children are invited to take part in a whole-class discussion about conformity. The poetry style of the book takes you by surprise at the beginning and offers a different structure to the story and really breaks the chapters down into different almost unique stories of their own. Many scenes in the book lend themselves to exploration through dramatic reconstruction, or even just freezeframing.I found it very difficult at first as I wasn't sure if I was reading it right, how do you know how you're supposed to read it? Stepping away from any standard form of verse was so powerful in depicting the conflicting emotions experienced by the protagonist. Malorie Blackman is a popular British author who has written a multitude of award-winning books for children of all ages, including the popular ‘Noughts and Crosses’ series. An easy-to-follow plan, a set of thought-provoking slides, differentiated activity ideas and printable resources are all included in this Cloud Busting KS2 lesson pack.
