About this deal

One cautious warning in regards to this book is that if you have not caught up on the Outlander television series to season five, wait to read this book. You will be spoiled for the show if you decide to read this first. Other chapters cover events of wider significance to the area - the harsh winter of 1947 and the foot-and-mouth epidemic and consequent sheep slaughter of 2001, and the demolition of the local railway in 1963.

AHDB Potatoes: if you grow three or more land hectares of potatoes you’ll have to register and pay an annual levy. Graeme told us that he chose this because the writing is ‘deft and delicate’ The Wood, by John Lewis-Stempel This is the book we have been waiting for from Tom Bullough, a complete work of art, astonishingly beautiful, deeply moving, and gripping from first to last.” —Horatio Clare, winner of the Somerset Maugham Award

Forget Jamie and Claire, it’s Sam and Graham that have the real chemistry. These two were clearly having the time of their lives galavanting about the countryside and taking the piss out of each other. That uncharacteristically knowing remark perhaps reveals as much about the author as it does about Oliver. Bullough is positioning himself within a tradition of rural writing which, while registering the general loosening of our ties to the land, nevertheless continues to draw fruitfully on the energies offered by those ties. If, in chronicling seven decades of farming life in a small corner of a changing world, he inevitably sounds an elegiac note, he also makes it clear that we’re far from finished, either with the land itself or with our evolving versions of pastoral.

Oliver may be handy with his fists but the valley, and his place in it, are threatened by forces he is poorly equipped to resist. Idris’s brother, Ivor, is greedily acquisitive and willing to go to considerable lengths to establish his claim to a portion of the farmland. The brothers’ feud affects the next generation, poisoning Oliver’s relationship with Ivor’s son and subtly weakening his efforts to keep the farm going. But more radically disturbing is the threat posed by rapid technological development and related changes in farming practice: as in much of postwar Britain, the traditional ways of farming in the valley are being displaced and the old, intimate relationship between nature and humankind is in decline.

Head Office

Bullough has written a novel of sublime attention and done do with great authority. Quietly passionate, dextrously evocative and engrossing, Addlands is indisputably relevant. It deserves to be recognised as such” Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) are those that fall under the EU’s Habitats Directive as habitats of flora or fauna that are ‘internationally important’. Along with Special Protection Areas (SPAs), they form a European-wide network of preserved areas, in which development is restricted. Ambitious in scope… the author’s psychological understanding of his people is particularly impressive… Bullough views his subjects, as E. M. Forster wrote of Thomas Hardy, ‘from an enormous height’”

Clanlands", a brief synopsis: Two actors from the tv show "Outlander" set out to make a mini-documentary about the history of the clans and historical battles of the Scottish Highlands. Sounds interesting, I'm not a fan of the tv show but I don't have anything against it either. Romantic historical fiction isn't my genre, and thus I know it's not for me. However, the subtitle suggests it's full of whisky, warfare, and adventure and those things do interest me. But instead of that, the book is full of an arguably comedic formula that gets old, and gets there very fast. I would describe that formula as something like the following: Creo que este también es un gran libro para quienes somos fans de Outlander, pues mientras Sam y Graham narran todo su recorrido, también nos van contando momentos del detrás de escenas de las grabaciones de la serie, momentos en los que el famosísimo clima escocés amenazaba con congelarles ciertas partes y, sobre todo, los lazos que se fueron formando entre todos los del elenco con el tiempo. Fresh, seasonal, environmentally-friendly produce for your table might be the result, but for many smallholders the joy is in the process.Justine Jordan, The Guardian, summed it up in her review: ‘Harvest can be read in mythical, even biblical terms, but the physical and emotional displacement of individuals and communities at its heart remains as politically resonant today as it was at the time.’ The Living Mountain, by Nan Shepherd The [characters] are realised so fully, and with such vitality, that there seems no doubt about the blood running through their veins… Bullough has a flair for alchemical descriptions, thrillingly repurposing adjectives and verbs… He also clearly savours the tang of his characters’ tongues [with] occasional, gloriously unexpected sunbursts of humour” PS Over on my Youtube Channel I interview bestselling authors LIVE and giveaway free books. Drop by and say hello! I love my Goodreads friends...no one else gets books like we do! A truly ambitious mixture of social realism, folklore, Romanticism and imagistic paean to nature. To say it’s Poldark meets Dylan Thomas is to undersell Bullough’s clout as a serious novelist, but in truth you could approach it either as a made-for-TV noirish romp or a cutting-edge work of art, and love it either way”

Intended to benefit both people and wildlife, Local Nature Reserves are protected areas of land, such as ponds or parks, that are deemed to benefit the local community that lives on or near them. Used for the likes of exercise, wildlife watching and more. Local Authorities designate and manage LNRs and generally do not approve any developments on them. The book is basically a narrated bromance masquerading as mutually directed barbs. Okay. I get it. I trade barbs and insults with my own friends. It can be funny. And by and large it was. It did, however, on occasion get a bit tiresome as I listened to it.I'm confused about who intended audience for this is. It can't be women, because they relentlessly call each other women as an insult (women are the reason you have a career, guys. Bros aren't watching your show. Have some goddamn respect) and yammer on about their ultra-typical machismo in the most boring way throughout. With a sprinkling of predictable homophobia, bien sur. It can't be people who are really interested in Scottish history, because they aren't offering any new insights (or any insights, period. "That massacre sounds bad" is not the kind of take people buy books for), and what IS there sounds read off a cue card in bored actor voice. I hope they were nice to whoever researched it for them. This user guide introduces you to our first two categories of data layers: boundary and land considerations. It’ll give you a brief summary of what the layers represent (for example, the distribution of flood zones around the country), which organisations collate the information, and what it might mean for the plot of land you’re researching. You can then use the layers to see where they fall on the map, and bring up the Addland Land Report Snapshot to see a summary of all the information. Oh! And shall we not forget the thinly veiled homophobic comments, alongside how they don’t feel “manly” and comparing the kilt to a dress, despite being oh so proudly Scottish? Setting out to understand a piece of land can be daunting. Whether you’re gauging the exact boundaries of a field or trying to understand the complex web of planning restrictions on a listed country home, getting to grips with a plot has traditionally been a thankless task. Addland’s boundary and consideration data layers change that. Drawing data from the likes of Ordnance Survey, HM Land Registry and the Environment Agency we display crucial information about land visually on our interactive map. Easy-to-use and always up-to-date, the Research tool’s 28 data layers help you gain complete insight into a plot of land, all from a single destination. The team have worked hard to optimise Addland for computer, tablet or mobile, so you can find and research land easily no matter what device you’re using, whether you’re out in the field or at a desk. Clanlands" is the story of their journey. Armed with their trusty campervan and a sturdy friendship, these two Scotsmen are on the adventure of a lifetime to explore the majesty of Scotland. A wild ride by boat, kayak, bicycle and motorbike, they travel from coast to loch and peak to valley and delve into Scotland's history and culture, from timeless poetry to bloody warfare.
