About this deal

The author uses lots of different words instead of said (e.g. growled, burbled, shrieked, squealed). Can you make a collection of them to use in your own writing? Some of the illustrations show silhouettes of the Creamers. Can you draw your own silhouette pictures? The adventure element is so much fun. Lucy is the perfect main character: she’s strong, feisty and confident, but not annoyingly so. She’s still unsure of her abilities, but she learns by the end just how much she’s really capable of. Just a warning to some younger children who might want to read The Creakers – there are some scary bits. But don’t worry – Lucy is here to save the day! Lucy’s dad becomes the King of the Creakers. Could you edit your own photo to turn yourself into a Creaker? Ella? I just disliked her. I wouldn't have minded if she had been taken by the monsters and never was returned. Bleh.

The one word that Tom Fletcher has used repeatedly to describe his second novel in the lead up to its release is 'disgusting', and I have to say I completely agree with him (in a good way!) Het boek is geïllustreerd door Shane Devries. Prachtige potloodtekeningen vullen dit prachtige boekje. CREAK is an example of onomatopoeia. Can you think of other examples? Make a poster to show them all. Lucy wakes up one morning to discover something very strange indeed. All the grown-ups in her town have disappeared.

I have to say that I am kind of agreeing with The Creakers. Yes, they did things the wrong way and they were creepy/scary, but they had their reasons. If only that had found another way to communicate and let the humans know about that.

A magical, mischievous adventure into an incredible new world, from Tom Fletcher, number-one-bestselling author of The Danger Gang and The Christmasaurus. When they are in the Woleb, the grown-ups behave like children. Can you use this idea for a story of your own? In my review of The Christmasaurus, I asked Tom to give us more girl heroes, and my goodness did he deliver! Lucy is sensible and responsible and brave and clever and daring and kind! She is a true leader and I couldn't ask for more in the main character. I loved her friends too. Norman is eccentric, skilful and sweet and I was pleased to see a girl of colour in Ella, the sassiest six-year-old you will ever meet! Although, I would have liked her to play more of a key role than just the annoying younger one that always tags along. I was thrilled by the cameo from William and Brenda, but I wanted to hear more from them and maybe even Bob and Pamela too. Begins with a premise that doesn’t bear examination and goes badly off the rails toward the end: skip.

Write a set of instructions to help the children manage their household jobs without their parents. Until, one morning, Lucy discovers that all the grown-ups have disappeared – as if into thin air. Chaos descends as the children in Lucy’s town run riot. It’s mayhem. It’s madness. To most kids, it’s amazing! Once again, Tom manages to convey important messages in The Creakers. Celebrating difference is a key theme carried through from The Christmasaurus. The values of looking after the environment and living and working in harmony with those who aren't like us are emphasised, challenging readers to think about the world around them brilliantly. The Christmasaurus is currently being developed by The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey into an animated, feature-length movie with original songs written by Tom.
