About this deal

There is no age statement on the Woodford Reserve Rye, but it is a straight rye so that means it’s at least 4 years old. Like with their 2 main bourbon products, Woodford Reserve and Woodford Reserve Double Oak, this whisky is actually a mix of 2 different whiskies. The bulk comes from spirit distilled on their column still with the remainder coming from spirit distilled on their copper pot still. New whiskey, same methods… so let’s see how it tastes. Woodford Reserve Rye Info Excerpt: It’s soft and sweet and I’m really missing is the rye aspect of this one. In some ways it comes off tasting a bit more like a Single Pot Still Irish whiskey, which could be the pot still influence, than it does other rye whiskies out there now. Interesting stuff for sure, but overall just comes across a bit empty – not fully my cup of rye. Burun : Tatlı tütün, karamel sedir, tarçın ve karabiber ilk aldığım kokular. Bunlara badem ezmesi, narenciye, muz, armut ve yanık şeker olarak adlanladırabileceğim tatlı notalar eşlik ediyor. Oldukça aromatik ve zengin.

The Rittenhouse has a sharper aroma profile, with a lot more tobacco, dry spices, and caraway. The Woodford, in comparison, seems sweeter, fruitier, and has a more solid, oaky presence. On the palate, the Rittenhouse is hotter (5% higher ABV), and drier. The spices shine through, reminding me why people refer to rye as having “spice cabinet” attributes. There is distinct cinnamon on the finish. The Woodford is softer on the palate, with a slightly heavier body. There is more balance between fruit and spice, although the corn shines through here, shifting the experience more in a bourbon direction. The spices recur on the finish. Unlike a lot of recent rye releases crowing about their “high-rye” mashbills, the Woodford Reserve Rye mashbill can only be called “low-rye”: 53% rye (the legal minimum is 51%), 33% corn, and 14% malted barley. Woodford Reserve claims this mashbill was chosen to maintain the house characteristics familiar from its bourbons, and is thus sweeter than most ryes. With no age statement on the bottle and the “straight whiskey” declaration, one must assume the rye is at or slightly above 4 years of age. Sweet honey, more fruit like apple, pear, plum and peach, along with faint oak, a hint of pepper and rich cream. Not nearly as spicy as expected - this is not a bold rye. Nose: Opening the bottle of Elijah Craig, you’re met with a mildly sweet nutty smell. It’s faint, but florally honeyed. Poured into my glass, there’s notes of caramel, cardamom, orange and fragrant cedar. With some swirling, it’s a reluctant but inviting aroma.Aromatics of leather, oak and cocoa develop as I swirl it around my palate before giving way to creamy notes of butterscotch and vanilla that balances everything out. Overall, the taste is softer and more delicate than the Elijah Craig. No necessarily better, just more varied and light. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. Butterscotch, fruit and caramel dominate with lighter notes of toasted grains, Banana Laffy Taffy and spice. There are some lighter undertones of spearmint and sugar that seem to reside under it the whole time, but never fully express. The Woodford Reserve Rye whiskey was launched in 2015 as the third permanent addition to the core range. The rye whiskey uses a pre-prohibition style rye ratio to pay homage to history’s original rye whiskeys.

Sweet and fresh. Cherries and vanilla with hints of grain and toasted oak. Subtle rye spices with hints of cinnamon and cloves. Excerpt: Instead of hitting you over the head with heavy spice and cereal notes as many ryes do these days, these elements relax on the palate, chilling out with some malty milk-chocolate and tangy apricot. This one was well worth the wait. We may, but are not under any obligation, to release new functionalities and tools or other features for the Service every now and then. Short, sweet finish. A-ha…here’s the spice. Bitter oak, pepper, some clove and a touch of cinnamon pair nicely with peach, honey and vanilla bean. Light, sweet and fragrant - Woodford Reserve Rye carries plenty of notes of honey, peach, clove spice and a hint of pepper. Swirling it in the glass brings out hints of leather, followed by more complex aromas like cocoa and a subtle smokiness. As forewarned by a friend of mine, the oaken notes are incredibly prominent that remind me of old antique furniture. No bad thing – as this sort of flavour is delicate, and drying, offering a different experience to the typically sweet bourbon profile.

This odd collection of flavors and aromas is strangely well balanced; a medium body and smooth texture wrap it up. The Woodford Reserve Rye is not the most complex or bold whiskey. However, it is sweeter and more approachable. If I have to choose between these two, I prefer the Woodford Reserve Rye. The Bulleit Rye doesn’t hide the spiciness; it is bolder and slightly more complex. John loved the Bulleit Rye the most as his palate prefers spicier tastes. With some time to breathe, there are hints of toasted oak and sweet caramel mixed with warm spiciness from the rye. There’s a subtle smokiness too, which gives it an inviting aroma that draws you in for more. Not an exceptional nose, but pleasant none the less. Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service.Finish: Medium-short in length. Spicy, with cinnamon red-hots and clove, fading into ginger (candied; dried). Not overly bitter on the finish. Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. Woodford Reserve Rye presents itself more as a bourbon than a rye until the finish. While not bad, it’s a soft rye, and doesn’t evoke much rye character through most of the experience. Bulleit Rye whiskey was introduced in March 2011. It is a whiskey high in rye compared to other rye releases. The mash bill has 95% rye and 5% malted barley and is produced in small batches. Woodford Reserve Rye Whiskey
