According to ancient Greeks, gargoyles, as waterspouts, can purify rainwater and prevent diseases and foul water supplies.

Derived from the Old French word gargouille which means “throat” or “gullet”, the term gargoyle refers to the sound produced when holding water in the mouth or throat while streaming air from the lungs (origin of gargle). Teacher Messages WB Monday 13th July 2020 Please read the teacher message foradvice on this week's work for English, Maths and IPC Gargoyles look like stone during the day, but by night they come alive and they play. They are a little comical and they just want to clean off the bird poop of the day and relax, have some fun and socialize. I love this book. It’s a great book to have for Halloween or just a spooky gathering of some kind.Recently I've been getting stationed in children's at work. On slower nights I try to familiarize myself with newer picture books...and end up going down nostalgia lane with books I adored as a young child and then lost to time and memory. This one was read to us when I was in primary school during library time, and I fell in love with it's grey-scale images, the way that the city was alight and alive even during the night, the way that artificial light and moonlight blended with the dark and shadow to make the night even more vibrant than the day. The impish creatures that I knew as a child (I KNEW) would come to life at night---then I forgot the title...the author, and eventually, the book altogether.

The gargoyles squat / high on corners / staring into space, their empty eyes unblinking / till night comes." So begins the poetic narrative of this striking picture book from author Eve Bunting and illustrator David Wiesner. Leaving their stiff daytime positions, the gargoyles peek into the museum they guard, cavort in a nearby fountain, and frighten the night watchman, before returning to their accustomed places as dawn approaches... Open mouth. As waterspouts, their mouths are wide open and their tongues are showing. This is believed to be a symbol of devouring giants, a threatening gesture which reminds people that there are some forces larger than humans. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/subjects/z826n39 - free resource with clips and games for the KS2 curriculum OTHER CURRICULUM – IPC/Science Lccn 93008160 Ocr_converted abbyy-to-hocr 1.1.20 Ocr_module_version 0.0.17 Openlibrary OL7468930M Openlibrary_editionCorbett Maths, has 5 a day questions covering the full range of Maths questions, one each day of the year, with answers, at bronze, silver, gold and platinum levels In this stunning collaboration of two exceptional talents, the striking charcoal illustrations and nimble text reveal what happens at night when the gargoyles come to life. With just the sign of the cross, the beast followed Romanus into the town where it was burned at the stake. Everything turned into ash except for the dragon’s head, so the townspeople mounted it to their church, serving as a watcher of evil and a protector against other dragons. In the middle of the night, the gargoyles that adorn the walls of a museum come to life and frighten the night watchman. During the day they protect our Churches , Schools and Libraries. Then there is night, and the time for the gargoyles to arise. It came from the French legend “La Gargouille”, whose main character involves a fearsome dragon that threatened the town of Rouen in France for hundreds of years, until Romanus, a local priest, agreed to vanquish the dragon in exchange for Christianity. Bunting went to school in Ireland and grew up with storytelling. In Ireland, “There used to be Shanachies… the shanachie was a storyteller who went from house to house telling his tales of ghosts and fairies, of old Irish heroes and battles still to be won. Maybe I’m a bit of a Shanchie myself, telling stories to anyone who will listen.” This storytelling began as an inspiration for Bunting and continues with her work.
